Who Was The Wrecking Crew?
Ever heard of Brian Wilson? The Beach Boys? The Ronettes? Nancy Sinatra? Simon and Garfunkel? The Partridge Family? The Byrds? The Carpenters?
Some of the most innovative and groundbreaking albums of the 1960’s and 70’s had one thing in common: The Wrecking Crew.
This was a group of studio musicians with incredible pedigrees who were brought in by these artists to help craft some of the most notable sounds of their eras. They were the people who created the environments that allowed some of the most brilliant artists of all-time to create what would become classic records.
Typically, background musicians read the sheet music, and that was about it. They arrived in their jackets and ties to follow the rules of that time. The Wrecking Crew came in to the studio to collaborate, to improvise, to see what new thing they could help the artist create by creating the space and the support that the artist needed.
(They didn’t name themselves “The Wrecking Crew,” exactly. The folks who were part of the status quo told guitarist Tommy Tedesco: “You guys are wrecking everything!” and the name stuck.)
So these guys were my inspiration when I set out to create something of my own. I don’t want my name on the record. I want to help you make the best… whatever it is you’re trying to make, and I want to do that by showing you how to create an environment that supports you and your people.
And to do that, we’re going to have to wreck some things, starting with whatever status quo is holding you back.
